Edward Bass to Helm Film on Belle Gunness, a female Sweeney Todd
Films that delve on murders rarely fail to make box office draw and serial killers have become a film genre of its own. Horror films have also been derived from it like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. The latest box office success in the serial killer genre has to be Sweeney Todd and if plans don’t get stuck on the drawing board, maverick producer writer Edward Bass hopes to start filming the female version this year. And it’s based on a true story about a Norwegian immigrant at the turn of the 20th century who became notorious as America’s lady serial killer who never got caught – Belle Guinness.
It looks like Hollywood producers missed this one in their penchant to remake old films and rehash tired stories. But Edward Bass was struck at the real life story of Belle Gunness already aired on national TV with a 50-minute documentary by Anne Verit Vestby - “Belle Gunness: a serial killer from Selbu.” The story lends itself readily to various cinematic interpretation and spin as her life is surrounded by intriguing mysteries. Between 1900 and 1908, Belle was suspected to have murdered more than 40 people in La Porte, Indiana, including her husbands and suitors as well as her children who were reported to have died, presumably with her in a fire that gutted her house under mysterious circumstances. Questions remained and she simply faded away, including her story until today.
Independent film director/producer/writer Edward Bass is bringing her atrocities to the big screen with a screenplay co-written with Eva Mayer. There is every reason to expect the movie to be a detective/thriller movie with a potential Oscar win for the actress in the role of Belle Gunness.
